During the months they are available, the majority of a wild budgies diet through out the year is fresh wild seed and grasses. It is at these times of year that they especially thrive, and it is also during this time are available that they decide to raise their chicks.
When a seed begins to germinate, the nutrients within it come to live and it is a tiny store house of goodies. For this |
We also offer quinoa, brown rice, wild rice, corn, whole grain pasta, barley, oats and a number of other whole grains to our budgies as well.
After soaking or a slow cooking depending on the specific grain, we finely chop whatever is on the menu for the day so they are budgie sized and easy to eat. By offering a variety of things to our adult budgies, the chicks also benefit by learning to love a variety of foods from a very young age. |
The more veggies the better! For this reason we give all of our adults and babies fresh veggies every day for lunch.
Veggies are essential for developing and maintaining a strong immune system, as well as providing a wide array of vitamins. They also maintain the good bacteria in their digestive system to ward off harmful bacteria and help in assimilation of minerals. and in digestion. Some of our flocks favorites include zucchini, kale, red and yellow peppers, broccoli, romaine lettuce, corn and baby spinach. |
Each of our breeding pairs as well as weaning chicks have egg food daily. The rest of our flock get egg food a number of times a week, and more often during molting periods.
With a combination of mashed hard boiled eggs, fresh veggies and whole grains egg our budgies can not help but love it! We have made a number of recipes over the years we have owned budgies, but here is our current recipe we feed our flock. |

We have tried a number of brands and currently we offer our flock Roudybush Mini Maintenance pellets. They are small enough for them to easily eat, but are not as small as the nibles or crumbles which they did not like as well. We keep a dish of them available at all times in each cage, and also add a small amount of them to our egg food and birdie bread as well for added variety. |
There are many different pre-mixed brands of seed available at pet stores and online, but we have found that most of the major ones like Kaytee, Higgins, Sun Seed, Lafebers, etc have poor quality dead seed when we have tried to sprout it. For the seed to have any nutritional value, it needs to be fresh and alive (with the ability to sprout) as well as clean and have a nice variety in the mix.
For this reason we purchase individual |
Birdie bread is served as a treat a couple of times a week for our flock. Most recipes have a mix of flour and eggs, with veggies or whole grains mixed in.
