The amount of time you will have to spend with your budgie, even on your busiest days during the week, should be the first thing to think about. If you have ever seen a group of budgies together they are very social little birds, constantly interacting and playing with each other, and like us humans they naturally they will not be as happy if they are left alone most of the time by themselves, and as a loving owner you naturally want the best for them.
Some families will easily have a number of hours of play and bonding time even on their busiest days, and a single budgie can be perfectly happy with this situation. In these cases when they have a nice cage |
To develop a real bond with a budgie, you will need to spend one on one time together regularly. While play time with other budgies is completely fine, this one on one time is essential to really earn their trust.
If you have only one baby in your home this will naturally be easy to do! Take advantage of the time your little one is with you each day to earn their trust and respect. If you have decided that it would be best for your budgie to have a buddy, there are two ways we recommend to have a good bond with them both equally. |
You can keep their cages close together if you would like, but with each baby having their own space until they are bonded with you. Trying to bond with two babies at the same time and the same cage is often more difficult than bonding with a baby one on one. When they have their own space with mostly one on one time with you in addition to some play time with their budgie friend for the first few weeks, it really helps to make bonding quicker and easier.
The other option is to bring home one baby at a time over a few months time, and during the quarantine period having one on one attention with the new baby before introducing both of the budgies, in a safe way of course. |
