Egg food is a excellent food source for any budgie! There are many recipes and ways of preparing it, and while there are many different commercially prepared brands of egg food we prefer to make our own. Especially during a molt, breeding and stressful times it is an essential part of a budgies diet.

We have found that the easiest way to prepare our egg food is with the aid of a food processor. When using one you can chop everything into very little pieces which are easy for a budgie to handle.
It also makes it easier to introduce new foods into the mix making the pieces smaller and less noticeable, but at the same time getting them used to the new flavors. |
Hard boil the whole eggs just long enough for them to be firm and easy to mash. Depending on how many you are cooking at a time, this will usually take 7-10 minutes.
Once they are done cooking submerge them in a bowl of cold water to cool them slightly, then peel the shell off while still slightly warm when it is easier to remove. Mash the eggs and set them aside. |
Cook your whole grains as suggested by the manufacturers instructions and set aside to cool. Please be sure to wash thoroughly any quinoa or rice before cooking to eliminate impurities. Especially is this important with quinoa, since it has a natural substance on the outside called saponin, which is toxic to birds and also gives it a bitter taste.
